Students Ye Be Warned

Hi guys and girls. I'm going to be helping put together a packet of info to give to people registering for first year engineering at UPEI. I want to hear from all of you (anyone, not just UPEI people) on the following types of things:
What do you wish you knew going into first year that you didn't
What were you most nervous about

The questions can pertain specifically to UPEI Engineering or to university life in general.

Please comment asap.

A really good question: why does it take 3 years here, while almost everywhere else in the maritimes it takes only 2? (no, I'll never let this die)

What kind of electives am I going to be required to take? How many?

Do I have to show up to class all of the time?

/that's all I have currently

That was so long ago I don't remember what concerns I had then.

If someone gives you the why it takes three year question you can tell them the benefits of how if you didn't like engineering you could easily switch over to any of the other sciences and it shouldn't prolong your university career. I was seriously considering doing a math or physics degree until well into my second year at UPEI.

Well some of us didn't consider other degrees, wanted to do co-op, and didn't want it to take more than 5 years.

Plus, your (Jeff's) answer to my legit question is a cop out. Why 3 years? Why in God's name 3 freakin' years??? I'm seriously considering emailing someone at UPEI just to see what kind of bullshit answer I get.

/2 legit 2 quit, hey hey

As a proponent of the 3 year plan I'll tell you why it didn't piss me off shaef - because I never ceased to learn. UPEI is better integrated with the engineering community than any school YOU ever attended and we were frequently treated to guest speakers and site visits. Whether or not we were making progress on someone's checklist towards graduation we were making progress on the checklist towards being a smart engineer.

In a nutshell.... we don't start engineering until second year. We take the first year to get passed Calculus 1 & 2 and give time for people to decide if they want to be in University.... let alone engineering.

However if your hardline goal is to do COOP in 5 years, you made all the right moves and UPEI would not work for you.

I have two things to note:

1) Not everyone knows at 17 what they want to do for the rest of their lives. UPEI provides an option for those considering engineering but not willing to commit to any one program or discipline. When I graduated high school I had no idea which direction to go, just that I didn't want to do arts. By the end of first year I had decided that I would do engineering, and possibly physics as well, but had no clue which discipline I might want to study. By the end of second year I had decided I didn't want to go through with physics and was leaning toward mechanical. I'm still not ready to commit to that decision, and I'm damn glad I've taken my time getting here.

2) I highly encourage high school students to take advantage of the orientation program at UPEI. In the spring of my grade 12 year I got assistance from a professor on my course selection, took a tour of the campus from one of the students, and even sat in on a first year chemistry class. I went to UPEI in the fall knowing what to expect. I may not have known exactly how hard my work load would be, but I knew I would be able to handle it, and wasn't worried about finding my classes, or how much information I would be expected to learn in a class.

As corny as it is, UPEI really is a great small university. They can't compete with graduate schools, but they aren't trying. They're good at what they do.

I've stayed silent about this just long enough. Personally, I can't stand orientations/information packages. I still remember when Sam went to every single NSO activity while I stayed back and played video games. I guess it depends on what kind of person you are. If you're hard as fuck like me, then there's no need for it. If I was curious about something, I would seek an answer from an appropriate source. Any more than that qualified as being coddled to me, and I wanted no part of it.

To conclude, I have no advice for your 'packet'.

/which of course means...nothing

Everyone here has made great points. Lexa's reasoning for going to UPEI are much the same as mine.

Neil, I didn't go to any of the UPEI orientation events either. I remember at the time I regretted not going because I could have met lots of new people but looking back, how many of those people would I be talking to right now. Likely none, unless they were in engineering.

There were lots of days I regretted going to UNB because of their inferior coop program and the fact that it takes longer to get your degree than Dalhousie but thats all in the past now.

/Sit back, relax and listen to Bob Marley

Wow, I really wrote a book there didn`t I... I actually have to agree with Neil and Jeff on the NSO/frosh week business, it just didn`t interest me. The orientation bit I was referring to was a half day thing that was more scholastic and had nothing to do with social interaction.

I think what lex is saying is the day Neil's mom drove us down (me, Neil, and Derrick) for is worth going to. Remember, she had Michael's car because his arm was broken? I think what I'm helping the people with is the day they come to get help picking their courses. I remember I went and there was some math prof there who didn't know anything about the engineering program.

Oh, awesome! Yeah, Dr. Haines helped me pick my courses, and while he was far more helpful than Dr. Holloway was when we got to UNB, he still didn't know a whole lot about the engineering program.

Hi, I am really glad I have found this info. Nowadays bloggers publish just about gossips and internet and this is actually irritating. A good site with interesting content, this is what I need. Thank you for keeping this web site, I'll be visiting it. Do you do newsletters? Can not find it.

Truly, this article is really one of the very best in the history of articles. I am a antique ’Article’ collector and I sometimes read some new articles if I find them interesting. And I found this one pretty fascinating and it should go into my collection. Very good work.
